Help! My Child is being Bullied!

BulliedNo parent likes to think about their child being bullied, or being a bully but more than 50% of children are involved in some way, either as a victim, perpetrator or witness. There’s a good chance most parents will have to deal with it at some point. There are many ways you can help.

Why children bully

There are many reasons young children feel the need to bully including:

  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Feeling powerless
  • Peer pressure from friends
  • Fear of being left out if they don’t join in
  • Taking out angry feelings
  • Being bullied themselves

Why is my child being bullied?

There are many reasons why a child may be bullied but bully victims often share the same traits which can make them more of a target.

  • Sensitive
  • Socially withdrawn
  • Low self-esteem and confidence
  • Quiet temperament
  • Anxious
  • Passive. Often let others be in control and don’t stand up for themselves

How can martial arts help with bullying?

The first thing people think of when considering martial arts for their child is that it will give them the ability to fight back if they are in trouble. This is, of course, the basics of martial arts but we believe the most important skill a child can learn in class is confidence. Ideally we don’t want anyone to have to use their martial arts skills outside of a ring, and we base our training firstly on building confidence, teaching children how to stand up for themselves and how to defend against an attack. We believe violence should be used only as a last resort and when all other options have been used.

Martial arts lowers stress and anxiety and increases self-esteem. One of the important factors in learning a martial art is respect, and students learn to respect instructors, themselves and others. Classes are about self-development and becoming a better, more rounded person.

Our instructors are happy to discuss any concerns you have with bullying, and our first session is free so why not come along and try out a class?
